What is the native language of Kenya? (and do I need to learn it before my trip?)
Swahilli is the native language of Kenya, but because it was a British Colony for so long, most people there will understand English. Signs, menus, direction, etc. are all in English so it will be easy for you to communicate.
What kind of currency do I use?
“Shillings” is the currency used in Kenya, and your Jambo Safari representative will help you convert money to usable funds once you arrive. Most American debit cards do work at ATM’s, and your credit card will also work for payment.
Will we be traveling with the same Guide from Jambo Safari for the entire trip?
Yes you will. You will experience the narration of different experts from the area, but as far as your travel arrangements go, one guide from Jambo Safari will be dedicated to your trip the entire time.
Do I need shots before I go on Safari?
Normally you do not need shots prior to your trip. It is recommended that you take prescription malaria medication before you go, while you are there, and a short time after you get back. Check with your doctor before your trip to see what is recommended for you.
Will my electronics work in Kenya?
You will need a 250V converter to make any of your American electronics work in Kenya. Hair dryers are available at your hotels, and all shavers have 110 wall mounts so you will not need a converter for your electric razor.
What kind of clothing do I need, and can I do laundry during the trip?
Laundry service will be available while you are in Nairobi. Most resorts require resort-casual when dining for dinner. (Meaning no shorts or tank tops). While traveling on Safari the key is to be comfortable and layer. Mornings and evenings can get rather cool in Kenya, while during the day it can be hot. Overall, Kenya is a casual environment compared to the U.S.
Will there be a safe to store my valuables?
Safe availability changes resort to resort, so the best option is to leave your valuables at home in the U.S.
How would my family contact me while on Safari in case of emergency?
As part of your Jambo Safari package, we provide you with a Kenyan cell phone for the duration of your trip. The phone will work for local and international calling/text-messaging for emergency purposes. The number will be issued to you, prior to your trip.
Do I need a visa to enter the country?
As you come off of the plane in Nairobi, there will be a clearly marked station to fill out your temporary visa paperwork. Overall, it's a very simple form and you can fill it out on the spot. The visa will cost you $50.00 US dollars, and they will only take cash. Keep the visa paperwork they give you with your passport for the duration of the trip. After you get your visa, you will proceeed to baggage claim.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Nairobi?
After you claim your luggage and go through customs, a Jambo Safari representative will be at the airport to greet you and transport you to the hotel.
